Finally she withdrew into a make-believe world — one that was much more pleasant than the real world. Here she at¬tempted to avoid the grim reality of being forsaken and unloved.
There are many people like this. Their lack of self-confidence can be traced to lack of love and affection. And whether it is merely an annoying factor or whether it leads to a serious maladjustment, the price of being unloved is too high.
People who have never experienced much love and affec¬tion may show this lack in a variety of ways. But after studying many cases, I am convinced of this: regardless of their behavior, they always accept some kind of substitute for love. Love is something humans cannot do without.
